Vestre Kirkegård

Vestre Kirkegård

Midst the noise from the city you can find this enormous and quiet green oasis. Here you can walk around lakes, elm tree avenues and green areas or sit on a bench and enjoy the serenity. With its 537 000 m², Vestre Kirkegård is the largest cemetery in Denmark and holds a big part of Danish history. You can for example find the only mass grave in Denmark here, where thousands of German refugees, who died during the years after the 2nd Wold War, lies. There are also specific sections for different ethnic groups such as Faeroe islanders, Greenlanders, Muslims and the Salvation Army. Amongst the many famous Danish people buried here are; the writers Herman Bang and Tove Ditlevsen, the Prime Ministers Thorvald Stauning and Jens Otto Krag, the polar explorer Knud Rasmussen and the artist Kristian Zahrtman.
