Kong Hans Kælder

The names behind this handsome and classic gourmet restaurant are Lene and Sven Grønlykke and Inge and Klaus Rifbjerg. Since 1976 Kong Hans Kælder has been serving fantastic French inspired courses from the two menus Signature and Innovation. As the name suggests, the restaurant is situated in the basement of the oldest building in Copenhagen. Preserved arches and chalk paintings on the walls create the perfect frames for a extraordinary culinary experience. When Kong Hans Kælder first opened more than 30 years ago there was a great outcry over the grandeur and the high prices. It was thought to be a snobbish restaurant with outrageous prices. But today Kong Hans Kælder is an appreciated gourmet restaurant with many visitors. And, as the owners put it: Expensive, yes. But not snobbish, goddammit.

Kong Hans Kælder is closed between 20 July-11 August. Adjacent to the restaurant there is also a Kong Hans shop with an assortment of Kong Hans merchandise.

Menu: Kong Hans Kælder was the first restaurant to launch what is today know as “The Great Menu”. You can chose freely from the two menus Signature and Innovations. They contain courses like goose foie gras with gizzard mosaic and Danish apple balsamic vinegar and Belle de Boskop, fried glazed angler with fjord shrimps, warm salad with early potatoes and radishes in a speckled vinegar, and rabbit cooked with lemon, black pepper and sage with a fricassee of broad beans from Lammefjorden
