Vor Frelsers Kirke

Vor Frelsers Kirke

Vor Frelsers Kirke is one of the most visited churches in Denmark. 250 stair-steps on the inside and 150 around the outside lead you up to the top of the tower where you have a magnificent view over Copenhagen's roofs, streets, parks and channels. The first stone of the church was laid in 1682 and the church itself is designed by the Dutch-Norwegian architect Lambert van Haven. The spire in black and gold is 90 meters high and was inaugurated in 1752. The spar is designed by the architect Lauritz de Thurah, and according to a tenacious myth Thurah committed suicide by throwing himself from the spire when he discovered that it was twisted in the wrong direction. This is however not true, Lauritz de Thurah died in disease 1759 and the spire was twisted in the right direction. The writer Jules Verne visited Copenhagen in 1861 and in his book”Journey to the Center of the Earth” the tower has its own role.

Where: Central Copenhagen

Opening hours: The tower spire is closed until April 2009 due to renovation.

Entrance fee: 25 DKK
