Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek

Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek

Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek is the official name of the art museum usually referred to as Glyptoteket. The museum was founded by the brewster Carl Jacobsen, who had one of the greatest art collections of his time. The name stems from Jacobsen's brewery”Ny Carlsberg” and the amendment Glyptotek means”collection of sculptures”. Glyptoteket holds Northern Europe's greatest collection of antique art, mainly sculptures from Egypt, the Orient, Greece and Italy. Here you can also find a noticeable collection of French and Danish pictorial art from the 19th – and 20th centuries, preferentially represented by artists like Paul Gaugin and Auguste Rodin. The museum was designed by architect Vilhelm Dahlerup, with a later addition by Hack Kampmann in 1892. In 1997 the museum was further extended with a supplement by Henning Larsen.
