“In angst we trust” is Skambyrån Mortified Swedens motto, and it fits them perfectly. At Mortified Sweden people meet to recite their dorky love letters, embarrassing poems and awkward novels from their childhood. Sort of like stand-up comedy but based on authentic teenage angst. It´s easy to recognize yourself when listening to people describing their first date or that horrendous summer camp they went to as a kid.
The Mortified movement originally started in America, when David Nadelberg found an embarrassing love letter he had written in seventh grade. He read it out loud to his roommates and they all laughed till they cried. Hence Mortified was established and has since grown into an organization with gigs all over America. Skambyrån Mortified Sweden is the first European branch. Regardless of country or city, all Mortified clubs share the same guidelines:
1. Mortified collects artifacts of adolescent expression (writing, art, media) through open calls for participants
2. Mortified collaborates with authors to organize presentations around unique personal themes and narratives that emerge from the material
3. Material must be presented by its original author
4. Material must be authentic; language is only altered to protect the innocent, awkward or angsty.
The best material from Mortified has been turned into two books ”Real words, real people, real pathetic” and ”Love is a battlefield”, you can buy the books at www.bokus.com. If you want to participate in Skambyrån Mortified Sweden you can email firstname.lastname@example.org for more information. Until next gig you can check out their site www.skambyran.se and www.getmortified.com
