Nyhavn

Nyhavn

Nyhavn is a must when you visit Copenhagen. Stroll along the canal in the midday sun and experience the street life, fishing boats and half-timbered houses. Have a seat at one of the many outdoor cafes and restaurants and treat yourself to a cold Danish beer. Many famous Danish culture personalities have resided in Nyhavn. The most famous is storyteller and fairy tale author H.C Andersen who lived in Nyhavn for more than 25 years. His first stories were written in house number 20 at the side of Nyhavn called Skuggsidan (The shadowy side). Eventually he moved to house number 67 and after that to house 18, where he lived to short before his death in 1875. Nyhavn is located at Kongens Nytorv Northeast corner. The 400 meter long canal which leads into the city, has a long history. It was dug out by soldiers during 1671-1673, so that merchant ships could reach the city. Many guided boat trips start out from Nyhavn, which is a different way to experience Copenhagen. Life´s always a party at Nyhavn but some parties are more official than others: 7 to 16 July you can visit Copenhagen Jazz festival, and 22 to 23 September they arrange a huge beer festival to end the summer season.

Location: At Kongens Nytorvs Northeast corner
